Falling Leaves and Rising Memories: Seasons as a Guide for Storytelling

October 2025 by Whitney Myers

I’ve been reminiscing with those living with dementia for years. Recently, I led a fall-themed story-sharing session with a group of seniors experiencing early-stage memory loss. What unfolded during our time together moved and surprised me. As participants shared their recollections, I felt myself swept into my own autumn memories: hayrides, pumpkin carving, fall festivals, parades, leaf-raking, festive decorations, and more. Some of these memories, tucked away for years, came alive for me in an instant. What fun we all had remembering. In that moment, I realized just how powerful the seasons can be – not just as markers of time, but as a guide for storytelling.

Seasons have a unique way of unlocking stories and connecting us to our past. Seasons are rich in sensory cues. The crinkle of fall leaves underfoot, the warmth of the summer sun on your skin, the delicate scent of spring flowers, or the beauty of a gentle falling snow — all of these images can transport us back to moments long forgotten.

Seasons also anchor life milestones like weddings, school beginnings, holidays, and ceremonies. Many of our key experiences are tied to the rhythms of the seasons. Remembering these moments often comes naturally when prompted by the time of year.

Seasons stir emotional connections, too. Spring invites renewal, summer inspires freedom, autumn encourages reflection, and winter offers introspection. These feelings open the door to storytelling, allowing us to share the underlying emotions behind the events.

Seasons are universal. Everyone experiences the changing seasons, so they provide common ground for conversation, whether we’re sharing with family, friends, or new acquaintances.

Seasons also carry rich symbolism, mirroring the stages of life itself. “What season of life are you finding yourself in today?” Reflecting on these cycles can lead to stories that are both personal and profoundly meaningful.

Finally, seasons are an invitation to engage. They prompt curiosity and conversation. Just like it did for me, these conversations spark stories within us that we might not have remembered or shared. A simple question about a favorite fall memory, a cherished holiday, or a seasonal tradition can uncover stories that surprise, delight, and connect us.

Seasons remind us that stories are everywhere, tucked into the rhythms of everyday life, waiting to be remembered and shared. Our memories connect us to our past, our present, and to each other. Take a moment to pause, notice, and share your “season” stories.

And here are a few of my best tips for reminiscing with those affected by memory loss:

  • Pay attention to the setting. Make sure everyone is comfortable.
  • Warming up to conversation can be challenging. Take the initiative to begin.
  • Open-ended questions are better received, and then be ready to help with additional questions and prompts.
  • Ask questions slowly and clearly, but never in a condescending way.
  • Eye contact and other non-verbal cues are critical.
  • Accept what is shared. Don’t try to over-correct. Respond to the person’s underlying emotions and intended communication, rather than becoming preoccupied with factual accuracy.
  • Humor and gratitude keep the setting friendly, warm, and inviting. Your gracious demeanor and responses set the tone and can validate an individual’s capabilities and self-worth.
  • Be prepared to adapt the objectives, structure, pace, duration, and content of the session.
